Greg, Yes, it does have a live pto. Take Lee's advice and stay away from the select-o-speed. They can be converted to 5-speed manual but not cheaply.

: : hi-being a novice in this area but looking a one particular ford 801 1959 selectomatic farm tractor, i am told by the owner that the tractor has actually live power. it has been my understanding that the ford line did not get live power until 1960+. does any one know if this is true (any way to actually document this?) also, what is the basic differences between a regular pto and a live pto? any help would be greatly appreciated and any kind of actual references or sources would also be of a big help. thanks greg hamilton.

: ::: Greg,
: If you want to save yourself a lot of problems and headache, do not get a Ford with a select --o speed. Yes, it does have live PTO, meaning, that the tractor Pto does not stop when you stop forward or rearward motion of the tractor. The select -o - junk transmissions have ahd nothing but problems in the past. When I have driven one, you want to back the tractor in the barn at night, because when you start it up in the morning and put it in reverse( with your foot on the clutch(hydraulic valve)) the tractor will travel forward. Then when you let out on the clutch(valve), the tractor will stall, unless you have tractor wide open, which is not good on your engine when it is cold. When the transmission warms up, It works a little better, but not much.

I was thirteen, and Kathy (my oldest sister) was seven. At this age, I believed tractor farming was the only way, hot stuff -- and given a chance I probably would have used the tractor, Dad's first, a 1936 Model "A" John Deere, to go bring in the cows! And I think Dad was ready for some automation too. And so it was that we acquired a good, used J. I. Case, wire tie hay baler. In addition to a person to drive th ... [Read Article]
