Having a problem with a Case 1490 tractor where I suspect there is algae contamination in the tanks. I have found brown sludge gooey deposits on the fuel filters as well as some water in the secondary filter. I have drained off 8 gallons from the bottom of the tanks and did not find much water but the fuel looks cloudy and contaminated. I also got some of what I believe to be bits of brownish algea. I just changed the fuel pump and it had about 1/8 brown deposits on the bottom also. Some quick research reveals this to be a common problem with diesel fuels. Very common in the Marine and trucking industries. I have never heard of these little devils. It seems that when a machine sits condensation in the tank creates water build up in the tank. The water settles to the bottom and the Algea thrives between the fuel and water line. I fear they have already infested and ruined my injector pump as I have only got the machine restarted twice in two days, runs strong but dies in about 5 minutes probably gunking up the pump with these little slimeball creatures of the underworld. I'm sure I'm looking at a rebuild or new injector pump close to $1000. Dropping the tanks and having them cleaned along with a new injector pump is getting close to the price of the tractor and I don't want to ruin another injector pump. Has anyone had any luck with the commercial biocides for killing these devils or other ideas on how to proceed to clean up my fuel delivery system? My 8n has never grown Algea in the tank, who would have known such creatures could live between fuel and water, the curse of diesel for sure!
