If it doesn't heal on its own, best to have a vet you trust take a look. Two scenarios--both with two different cats of mine:
Cat one injured her paw somehow, was limping. Brought her to a vet I'd never used. They sutured it, no anaesthetic, cat was in howling pain. She recovered fine, no thanks to the efforts of the clinic. It was a minor gash and in retrospect I should have given it some time.
Cat two had a gash near its tail. I waited to see if it would heal. Became infected and vet had to do an extensive procedure to get her sewn back together. This was a few years ago and she's fine.
Cats do have a remarkable ability to heal from injuries, but you should monitor yours and see if it needs a visit to the vet. Try to find a clinic you trust--not one that's just going to perform a procedure because they happen to have a cat in front of them.
