Your not the first person I've heard say that. I have never actually had to work a 2 cylinder hard, but the drive-train "looks" about bullet proof. All of the gears look very substantial. Was this a common issue with any of the JD's of that vintage?
I use a 60 to pull a manure spreader sometimes, and a 50 or B on a sickle mower to keep the ditches clear. Nothing like heavy ground engagement work like they were using them in the 40's-60's for. I'm not arguing with you at all, just interested. Worst issue I've ever actually seen was an A that got locked between gears at a tractor show.
