When Das Boot was on TV here I was working with a bloke whose father was on anti sub corvettes in WWII in the Atlantic. He told me the film was so realistic that his father actually felt sorry for the U-Boat men when they were being depth charged!!
Tactics was a HUGE factor in killing subs - in the Atlantic there was Captain Walker RN who could find & kill them where others had failed & his methods were adopted across the Allies throughout late 1943 & early 44 when the build up to D Day was taking place. U Boats ceased to be a big menace thereafter.
