I never was a big time farmer, but from when I started haying in 1974, I always had 3 tractors- one each for mower, rake and baler. It was a pretty humble outfit in those days- 8N on the sickle mower, McCormick W4 on the side delivery rake and JD 420 on the baler. If one of them went sideways, I'd have to make do, but if I could keep all 3 running, I didn't have to change implements. I upgraded as I could, and I think the year I quit I had an IH 674 on the mower/conditioner, Oliver 550D on the rake/tedder and Oliver 1550D on the baler, with a couple others waiting in the wings.
My BIL put up more hay than me, and he only had one tractor- and with a 3 point disc mower and 3 point rake, it seemed like he was changing over all the time. He finally got a nearly-new Kubota a few years back, and I figured that would help a little. Next time I was at his place, I looked around and asked "Where's the Massey"? "Oh, I sold it- didn't need it anymore, now that I have the Kubota." Oh, well, I guess if he enjoys mounting and dismounting 3 point equipment out in the sun, more power to him.

Today's Featured Article - New Life for an Old Allis - by Tyler Woods. My friend Jon, has an old '39 Allis Chalmers B. He thought it a marginal tractor that had long since served its time. Jon's Allis has a small front loader and though it doesn't carry much, it serves his needs. It was the hard starting and low power that made him think it was time to replace the old girl.
