Bought a tow-behind cement mixer at an online auction yesterday. Mentioned to the wife on Wednesday that I was "looking at it". Yesterday, told her I wanted to monitor it after we got home from work. Showed her the price of a new one on a website, told her I wanted to pour a sidewalk outside of our 2nd home, etc. Explained what a max bid would be and how cheap that was compared to new. In other words, I eased into it and got her approval, by that I mean she didn't scream "he-- no!" With 10 minutes to go, I submitted a bid and won it. I started to re-explain how this was a smart buy. She just shook her head and said, "don't try and justify it, it's just another toy". I left it at that, she knows me well.
No way would I ever try and hide something like that. She does the finances and I trust that if she says "we can't afford" something, we probably can't.

Jon called me to help him discover why his tractor wouldn't start
