I haven't really stayed so far behind. I moved up to Windows 7 for the newer browser. Since IE8 did not support a lot of new "features," I tried out FireFox. Did not like it, but it was an interim step. The only thing that is allowing all of these new "features" is cheap bandwidth. Seems that they keep adding in all of these tasks that absolutely chew up bandwidth. Are these things really necessary? Am I REALLY missing out on so much? I think not. I do NOT need to be targeted for more and more advertising. I also do not need some "internet big brother" watching everything I do on the internet - and then trying to sell me something I do not need or want. I also do not need long running Java scripts eating up my system resources while they mine my hard drive for data - again to sell me something I do not need or want.
Of the things that I do on the internet, here is a partial list:

Netflix. I stream video as an alternative to pay tv.

I do online banking.

I pay most of my bills on line.

I visit and participate in several forums.

I locate and buy hard to find items (that I need) on eBay.

Past that, I can't see what else I need or want from a computer. I also store my digital photos, email, and the like on my system. I also expect my computer to be functional without being connected to the internet.

My entire point was that I see little point in change just for the sake of change. Improvement is always welcome. Useless change for the purpose of generating revenue for a software publisher is not.

Today's Featured Article - New Life for an Old Allis - by Tyler Woods. My friend Jon, has an old '39 Allis Chalmers B. He thought it a marginal tractor that had long since served its time. She smoked terribly and never had much power but he couldn't afford another so he was limping along with what he had. Jon's Allis has a small front loader and though it doesn't carry much, it serves his needs. It was the hard starting and low power that made him think it was time to replace the old girl. Jon called me to help him discover why his tractor wouldn't start ... [Read Article]
