I'm gonna weigh-in on this one from my perspective of 38 years of university teaching, research and administration. Regrettably, I witnessed the degradation of a national institution that was the envy of the world to one that is now an over-priced, bureaucracy-bloated, money-grubbing, politically-correct outfit of questionable value. As the various states systematically reduced the amount of tax dollars going to higher ed, university administrators became more dependent on grants, contracts, ever-increasing tuition, and private donations. And, wow, they discovered the yellow brick road! They hired more money-grubbing bureaucrats and their support staffs to solicit money, pressured faulty to crank out more grants and contracts (while turning much of the real teaching over to adjuncts and graduate assistants), built ever more lavish facilities (to attract outstanding students, of course), and totally capitulated to the athletic departments because they can bring in multi-million dollar "deals" from TV revenue (did you happen to catch what Michigan is paying Jim Hargbaugh to produce a winner next year?) That's just a beginning, but I'm stopping because I get in such a foul mood thinking about this.
