: I noticed a rattling sound from behind the seat. I tried lowering the hydraulics and they stayed up. I disengaged the PTO and the rattle went away but the blade still stayed up. I turned off the tractor and the blade immediately lowered. I started the tractor again and everything worked fine. : Any ideas? Is it OK to leave the hydraulics up when the toplink is stopping the blade 2/3 of the way up? Jim, I don't know the hydraulic system controls, but it's surely an open center hydraulic system and you must be staying on high pressure. This will heat up the oil. I suspect the high pressure is not very high compared to later tractors. The odd angle on a 3pt. hookup can put much more strain on the system than needed. You should put a hyd. guage on the system and observe the rise in pressure as your hitch raises. Limit the travel of your position control to where you won't stay on high pressure. A small bit of oil being released through the relief valve, can put many air bubbles in hyd. oil, especially if the oil hasn't been changed as required. Old oil can't break up bubbles like newer good quality oil. Air in hydraulic systems is very hard on pumps. Bubbles explode under pressure. Oftentimes new oil will cut the noise of the system way down.
