Your block is plugged at the bottom where the coolant goes down by the sleeves which will make a noise as the coolant isnt just flowing like its supposed to. By removing the radiator and lower housing you can use compressed air and water to get that junk out. You could also leave the lower housing on and make something to seal the hole so a garden hose would force back pressure and the junk could go out the top of the block. A temp guage in the lower housing will not read very good as the system when it works just done get hot enough to register on the guage. Now if you had shutters you could stop air flow enough to get the guage to register. The sensor will work better in the top of the head or in the inlet from the radiator. Some of the inlets had a place for the sensor.
