First, let's get on the same page terminology wise. Generally here the term "turn over" refers to it spinning the enging when you hit the starter. Sometimes it will "turn over" but not "start" or "run". But the way you describe it running and then quitting makes me think it is turning over. Second, always, always check your spark first. Verify that it has a bright bluish white spark that will jump at least 1/4". Short or yellowish spark will not do. It requires no tools to pull a plug wire, lay it on the head or block to check. See pic. Third, about 80% of the time when an engine quits like that it is due to fouled points. Either there is corrosion on them or the rubbing block that follows the cam has worn down and they are not opening wide enough. So check your points.
