Can't improve on JDSeller's analysis. Also 25-30 tons per acre is a good ballpark yield. Need a soil test to determine fertilizer needs- swallow hard and fertilize for maximum yield. When diesel was 2 bits a gallon and seed corn was $15 a bag, you could get away with skrimping on fertilizer, but not these days.
Also, you have to have a good sturdy fence to keep the cows out. Dad's one and only attempt at corn silage ended when the whole herd got into the cornfield one night, and had destroyed it by morning. An electric fence won't do the job.
