Before all the push for recycling, groups like the Boy Scouts used to make money doing paper drives. China imports used U.S. newspaper to make cardboard from as it's cheaper than using raw materials. Companies bale their scrap cardboard and sell it for recycling. And all those companies buying aluminum cans are making profits. Glass companies prefer using recycled glass as part of their new glass.
Plastic recycling only happens when the government requires it. Plastics and dirty trash (any paper used with food) should be burned for energy rather than recycled because of cost.
