Tailgating has to be about the stupidest thing you can do while driving. I just don't understand what they're thinking when I see an empty road except for two vehicles doing 45 mph, and one is 15 feet off the other's tail. WTH?
But I do agree on just slowing down until your speed makes the distance between them and you safe for stopping. One of the local guys has a bumper sticker that says "The closer you are, the slower I drive". 'Nuff said.
On the other hand one of the reasons that people will drive too fast in the right lanes on a multi-lane highway is because of the people who insist on driving too slow in the left lanes and refuse to move over. The rules are simple: 1. If there's no vehicle on front of you and there's vehicles behind you, move over a lane. 2. Stay to the right unless you need to pass. 3. If you don't understand these rules stay off the highway.
