What I fixed was the steering trouble with my 340 utility. The steering gear was way out of adjustment. I had half a steering wheel worth of slop. I tightened it up according to the instructions in my shop manual, and now it steers as it should.
I think I have the engine knock figured out too. I used a short section of garden hose for a makeshift stethoscope and went all over the engine with it. All is quiet in the lower end. I can pinpoint the sound on the upper left side of the engine towards the front. But when I check the right side on the valve cover everything sounds as it should. Now I have two choices. It's either a tappet hanging up, or a small section of the exhaust manifold gasket has blown out. Had this happen to one of my Case 400's and it sounds like the engine is coming apart. I'll leave that repair for this summer when it is warmer. At least I know it isn't something serious.
