The engine is a 113 cub inch Waukesa Flat-head (or L-Head, i.e. side valve) model FL engine. The parts numbers for most of the FL engine are the same as the Fuller & Johnson BD-1 engine that was built for IHC to put on the model 20 and 21 Harvester Threshers. The parts that are different are the head (the harvester engine had the radiator over the flywheel with the fan driven by belt off the flywheel) and the front cover on the timing, governor and magneto drive gears. This engine was fitted to the first 2500 F-12 tractors except 10 at about number FS-600 to FS-609 where IHC tried their own new 113 overhead valve engine which became the standard engine for the F-12 and the other 12 series tractors. There was also a small number of F-12 tractors fitted with a Waukesa engine with replaceable sleeves
