The Pilot Guide was IH`s idea to promote the idea of "look ahead farming". On the Farmall 350, there was a gauge like pictured below that mounted on the side of the dash. The gauge pictured below is on my Farmall 230. I believe the F230,F350,I350 & F450 with fast hitch all had this pilot guide when sold. There were 2 cables running to this gauge. One cable ran from the pointer in the gauge to the side of the fast hitches` hydraulic cylinder (2nd picture below). It show`s the height of the fast hitch . The other cable went from the gauge to the underside of the fast hitch cylinder and showed wheel slip when plowing. When indicator showed wheel slip, you would pull the traction control lever (2nd picture-lever with notches) up to "plant " the rear tires and get more traction. This was IH`s first attempt at a draft control hitch.
