sounds like your points are not making contact because of something coating the contact surfaces or you don't have a good connection with the points or points to ground, with a test light dist. cap removed points open test the wire where it connects to the points with the ign.switch on, it should light up, then turn the engine enough to close the points then retest it, should not light up ,if it does try cleaning the contacts, if after cleaning contacts if it still lights with points closed ,hook the test light wire led to a hot wire and test contact for proper ground, it will light any time it makes contact with a ground ,points base and base plate as well as dist should be a ground source,a common mistake made when hooking up the wires to the points one of the wire will get positioned wrong and short out the points, but you said you coil is hot on both sides that won't be the case if its shorted
