Not that uncommon, but some people do not know they are starving when cold if they are not using a loader or something.
I remember an instance involving pumps that were damaged at the Oliver factory in Charles City and we (Cessna) had to figure out what was happening. Turns out that after the new tractors were built and stored outside in Iowa in the winter, the guys loading them on trucks were hopping on the tractor, firing them up and revving the engines to at or near full throttle when they loaded them. The hydraulic fluid was like molassas and starving the pump. We had a cold room you could put a tractor in (in this case, an 1855 Oliver) that would go to -60 degrees (if you needed to) and tested them there. You could not even pour the fluid out of a can at -30 or -40.
So it's not unexpected that in Nebraska in the winter you would cavitate a pump when the fluid is cold and sucking through a filter.... let it idle and warm up a while. A bigger suction filter will not help that much.
