Okay, heres the deal, on a 12 volt tractor you can do EITHER:
(Short answer to your immediate question: YES, if you use a 12 volt coil, remove the ballast)
a) Use a 12 volt coil (some call internally ballasted) with NO EXTERNAL BALLAST RESISTOR between the ignition switch and the coil
b) Use a 6 volt coil WITH AN EXTERNAL SERIES VOLTAGE DROPPING (12 to 6) BALLAST RESISTOR BETWEEN THE IGNITION SWITCH AND COIL.
NOTE an Ignition Switch must obviously supply 12 volts to a 12 volt coil ONLY when switched ON but not when OFF DUHHHHHH Some mag kill switches supplied a ground to the mag when OFF but no connection to the mag when ON. YOU NEED AN IGNITION SWITCH with a hot BAT voltage input connection and then the IGN out terminal goes hot when its switched to ON
