Broken crank on farmall D 504

some where in time the nut came off the front of the crank, This haying season the crank snap in half on the third rod, Q?, Would the nut cause this to happen or what would cause this? this is a farmall 504D, d188 motor alsowe are having troble locating a crank in the northeast Pa, any ideas thanks Craig
