240U starter quit on me. Had been spinning but the drive was not engaging every time. It would eventually catch and spin the motor, but sometimes I would have to hit the button 3 or 4 times before it would catch. Then about 3 or 4 weeks ago it started "clicking" the solenoid but sometimes not spinning the starter. I could tap on the solenoid with a wrench and it would make contact. Then this week it would not not spin even tapping on the solenoid. Took it off and to an "auto electric" shop. Guy said if it was still a 6v. starter that could be the reason it was not engaging the drive all the time... spinning to quickly before engaging. He can switch the field windings to 12v. for $40 something and is fixing whatever else is wrong. Drive gear was badly worn, solenoid is probably shot and who knows what else. Hope I get it back for less than a couple bills.
