Dave is from central Massachusetts, about 40 miles from me.
There aren't really many 9 series around here. Many of the agricultural 9's have come from the prairie states and Canada. I suspect the rest of the 9's were used in road building or other industrial applications.
New England, since the 1830's when the midwest was developed, has been primarily diary and orchards with a few local specialties like potatoes, asparagus, cranberries, shade grown tobacco, maple products, and some truck farming for local markets. Sheep grazing was huge in the 1700's due to the rocky and hilly terrain. Row cropping was done in the valleys.
