Cam, Crank, valve timing will not be affected by removing the pump and gear - when all reassembled you must set the distributor timing. This I think is easiest to do by marking top dead center before removing the distributor, use timing mark on crank pulley - when it is TDC the rotor under distributor cap will point to number one cylinder plug wire when cap is installed on distributor. Sometimes you will find that parts are already marked; the cap may have something to show #1 spark plug wire and the metal distributor case may have a small grove scratched or cut to show where the rotor points for #1. Mark these positions for an easy way to re-time the distributor. When you are ready to reassemble be sure the crank pulley is aligned with the TDC point, then install distributor with rotor pointing to the mark you made on the case of the distributor. Most important I think have a repair manual; Always best not to rely on memory and my typing. With my IH 300U I continue to have hydraulic issues, it seems that I can never get everything working exactly right?
