If the ring gear is bad, that requires that the tractor be split in half to access the flywheel at the rear of the engine.
The clutch and pressure plate needs to be removed, then the flywheel.
The ring gear wraps around the flywheel, and is a shrink fit. The old gear needs to be cut off with an acetylene torch. The new gear is heated and dropped on to the flywheel.
While you're in there, you may need to have the flywheel resurfaced. You may need to replace the clutch and pressure plate. You may need to replace the IPTO drive gear. You may need to replace some seals.
