1. Keep a tractor of sentimental value.
2. Help Mom out a little with living expenses.
IMHO, #2 just trumps any desire to pay a "fair" price for the tractor. You should be as generous in your offer as you can afford to be. I would START at $3500 and go UP from there. Make your Mom think you're getting the deal of the century.
Advice from one "young 'un" to others: If you have a tractor that you want to keep, make sure you make your intentions CRYSTAL CLEAR to your folks. When they decide to sell the tractor, you get first dibs.
...and if you get first dibs, make it worth their while. Don't play the "family discount" game. That's BS. If you really want it you should meet or beat any other offer. If there are no other offers, then figure out a "fair" price and tack whatever else you can afford on.
