If I were to remember all those I have installed I would place the battery side on the discharge side, and load on the charge side. (this assumes it is positive ground as it was originally) if it is a non stock meter, or of unknown origin I agree it is a need to test deal. A quick test is to use a spare light bulb or headlight from a car. Place this between the charge side meter terminal, and the neg bat terminal, then connect the other gauge terminal to the other bat terminal with a jumper. if it discharges, that is the way it needs to be connected.
