You have to realize that the inside end of the bull pinion shaft is supported by the side gear in the differential. These old diff's get pretty worn and allow that gear to move up and down quite a lot. Grabbing ahold of the end of the bull pinion shaft you may very well be feeling that gear moving up and down. You will have to look closely at the bearing to determine if the play is in the bearing itself or the diff. This is common setup on all these style tractors until later larger models like 706 went to a straddle mounted bull pinion with tapered roller bearings on each side of gear. The 656 used a needle bearing or bushing inside the differential to support that end of shaft and tapered roller bearing on the outer end.
