Early 706 has a D282, late has the D310 "German" diesel.
Is the D301 the bored-out combine version of the D282, or did you mistype?
Converting is a lot of work and a lot of parts, even if you fudge a few things and do some fabrication. To do it "right" is even more parts.
We had a D360 American diesel out of a bus put in a gas 756 several years ago. The mechanic used the gas frame rails so the tractor is now 1" longer and the hood doesn't fit without extensions. He also used the gas radiator, and the outlet is on the wrong side. The mechanic's son TIG welded up a cross pipe for the radiator, so the extra inch of clearance up front came in REAL handy. Power steering lines had to be extended. It looks a bit cobbled up around the bell housing area but it all works and it's solid.
