I would consider converting the transaxle into a reservoir. Replace the gear oil with Hy-Tran or equivalent. Place a strainer, check valve, and tee at the rear drain plug or a safer remote location with a suction hose. The check valve might not be necessary. It depends how good your pumps are at holding a prime.
Despite what Jim says about the PTO pump, the Prince pump will easily handle 1200 RPM. The same pump is used with 1000 RPM PTO. The mfg changes out the internal splines to suit 540 or 1000 PTO shafts. I can't think of any small hydraulic gear pump that can't run at 2000-2500.
