My digital camera download software (Canon) allows me to download to my pc any size I want to. All I do is choose the wide size and the software autmaically enters the correct height size.
If I am downloading photos for YT, Craigs, Kijiji or emailing family stuff I usually do it at 600-800 pixels wide which makes it about a 80-100 kb photo which is perfect for this forum.
Most magazines and newspapers want 3000 pixels wide so they want to do their own sizing, cropping and editing.
If I am going to make a hard copy photograph I also use the 3000 for the same reasons.
I personally dont see any reason for a huge photo here. If there is some detail you want to show go ahead and use your 1200-3000 pixel wide photo but crop the part you want to show down to about 100 kb before you send it here.
