No one can vouch for the integrity of a manufacturer's gear, except the seller, and they warrant the product. A used gear has no warranty. That said, I believe in good used gears for that application. The Key would have been nice if it sheared, but it is not designed to shear. it is not a mechanical "fuse". It was designed to carry as much torque as the gear teeth could supply, and that was probably 60 to 70% of the maximum expected momentary pressure applied.
The limiting factor is the pressure relief valve on the hydraulic system. If that has been tweaked, or is stuck closed, it will cause breakage. I would use a used gear from a later model tractor that is number compatible with the gear in yours. The caseih.com site has parts diagrams that show the highest compatible gear number for replacement. If in doubt, look at IH 200 and 230 tractors to see which gears they spec for use. JimN
