The device he is talking about is called a 9 speed. It was produced by several companies M&W, and Hiesler, to name 2. They are like an overdrive in some ways. and not in others. Many overdrives are after the transmission. These are in the trans affecting 1-2-3-4th gears only, leaving 5th (a direct to output shaft coupling)alone. When working it will not go faster than fifth would normally, it does give 4 gears in between the original 4th, and original 5th. Desirable yes. reparable probably. The most likely problem is a linkage issue. A stuck cable, or actuator. Less probable but worse is broken internal components and or gears. JimN
