Gordy, hmmmmmm say the tractor battery got installed OPPOSITE from the correct polarity (likely at 6 volts was Positive ground originally) that would make the ammeter register bass ackwards as you indicate......
Buttttttttttt if the genny were correctly re polarized it could still be charging fine, its only that the ammeter would then show discharge when shes running at fast RPM
Sooooooooo what does the ammeter do when shes running is the obvious question???? Cuz if it swings to - discharge and more so as RPM increases, she may be charging !!!!!!!
Put a voltmeter on the battery and just sitting there NOT running Id expect around 6.3 volts but then when running at fast RPM ifffffffff the battery voltage rises to the 6.5 to 7 or so range SHES CHARGING AND YOU SIMPLY NEED TO REVERSE THE AMMETER LEADS to make it register correctly. HOWEVER you may wanna take it back to the original Positive ground,,,,,,,,,,Polarize the genny BEFORE you start it up,,,,,,,,leave the ammeter as is and it should now register correct.
Whatever you do POLARIZE the genny (see instructions in my procedure below)
