Set TDC on # 1 as Bernie says. If the rotor does not point to #1, remove the distributer, rotate until the rotor points to #1 and install in that position. Do not try to "compensate for the meshing of the gear", (whatever that means). The distributer will mesh properly without moving the rotor from #1. After the gears mesh and distributer is inserted all the way, rotate it conterclockwise. Remove the coil wire from the distributer cap (switch on), hold end of wire 1/8 inch from the screw/nut on the dist that the small wire from the coil attaches to, rotate dist clockwise, viewed from the rear, until you get a spark. Tighten the distributer. It is timed. As a final check rotate engine one full turn, and check for spark again with the coil wire. If it does not start after that, it is not timing.
