tappet guides in a 10 20 engine

I'm working on a 10 20 engine in a 1928 Gallion roller. The tappets were all hopelessly frozen in the guides and the guides in the block. As you know you have to get the tappets out before you can get the tappet guides out because the tappet/cam face is bigger than the hole the guide comes out of. In attempting to remove the tappet guides with an easy out (as suggested by the old service manual if you don't have the special tool) the tappets broke off at points where there were holes in the sides. I presumed these holes where rust holes since they open right into the water jacket and would let water into the tappet guide from where it would go up into the rockerarm area or down past the tappet into the oil pan. However the holes (six on each guide) are evenly spaced on the guide and look like they were made that way. Does anyone have any idea if these holes are supposed to be there and if so what keeps the water out of the oil. Does anyone have spare guides to sell without the holes?
