I have a theory on the B and I'd like to hear what people think:
My theory is that the B indicates chassis style. The A/B/BN/Super A tractors all were prefixed with an A.
A = "frameless" design, load bearing engine block
B = dual rail frame
Frankly, I think there is the distinct possibility that there was a good chance that we'd all be waxing nostalgic about the old Farmall K instead of M, too.
Well, that makes sense about the "A" and "B" frame designation. And by the time the "FC" came along, perhaps they decided they didn't need to designate the frame???
I have also wondered if the M was originally going to be a K. Then, somebody at IH must have said, "Hey, my sister is named Kay. 'K' sounds too much like a girl's name to be our biggest, most powerful tractor model. Let's call it an 'M' as in 'MAN'." And the rest is history, as they say....... Who knows? But, what an imagination I have, eh? mike
