Don't see my manual at the moment, but this will get you close enough for it to run.
Remove the spark plug from #1 cylinder & bring the engine around to #1 top dead center on the compression stroke. I believe there's a timing mark, but I just watched the top of the piston through the spark plug hole to find TDC. You could also use a piece of wire as a feeler.
Rotate the magneto so that the rotor is pointing at the #1 contact and the points are just opening. Connect the coupler on the magneto shaft in this position.
Set the impulse and turn the engine over until #1 comes up on compression again. The impulse should trip slightly after top dead center. If it doesn't, adjust the position of the coupler until it does. If it trips before TDC, the engine will kick back.
To adjust the coupler, remove the two bolts holding the halves together, rotate the magneto side in the appropriate direction, and put the bolts back in whatever pair of holes lines up.
