You have to choose between replacing the coil or keeping the old coil and adding a resistor. Thing to watch is total resistance from battery to distributor (I think for a 12 volt system it should be around 2.75 ohms and on a 6 volt system its around 1.5, but look it up). Hint - a replacement coil doesn't cost much.
