Here in the UK we have had the 3 point hitch since 1936 on the Ferguson Brown tractor and it started to become popular in 1946 with the introduction of the Ferguson T20. The ferguson 3 point was Cat1 and in 1947 Ford put Cat 2 on the Fordson E27N tractor also Nuffield put Cat 2 three point hitch on its Universall tractor introduced in 1948. So as you can see the UK was used to 3 point hitches when they started building the Farmall M at Doncaster in 1949. The 3 point hitch they built for the M in 1950 used the Lift-all belly pump and rams working a cross-shaft to the lift arms. A picture of the linkage can be seen on Mike Farmers excellent shot of a golden Super BMD from a few days ago. The top link was mounted on the tractor with a bracket bolted vertically to the rear of the top cover.It was a very strong lift and i worked one for many years. IH used this lift till 1954 when they fitted an engine driven pump and a rear mounted lift cylinder. MJ
