Not really, I have seen generators go several years W/O loosing polarization. The pull in voltage of the cutout relay in the new VR is probably set too high. This adjustment is one that requires a bit of understanding of the content of that can. The cutout has the biggest contacts, with heavy solid wire going to them. There is a spring that pulls these apart when the generator is stopped. This prevents the battery from draining into it when its output is less than bat volts. Low idle, or shut off. A very timid (small) incremental (tiny) loosening of the tension. will get it right. If the system reliably opens when taken to an idle, or shut off, it is then fixed. The needle on the amp gauge will slowly go towards discharge when Idled down all the way, (it may get to 3 amps or so discharge) then it will snap a little and go to just a tiny discharge. The same happens when it is shut off, but the needle goes back to 0 . If the needle goes to 10 or more discharge and stays there, it has been loosened too much. Disconnect the Big wire on the generator to prevent it from getting hot and letting smoke out. A good book (like Motors automotive dictionary) is a great help.
