Kevin: That works fine for a new pump or if you've had the pump apart. No question if the gears of that pump are packed with petroleum jelly, it will stay there will installing pump and lines and be very effective in pulling oil along.

For the guy that has split his tractor, hardly worth taking the pump apart just to add the jelly. Most times when you split the tractor a combination of oil left in pump, oil still in lines, clean screen in touch control and a full reservoir, the pump will self prime very quickly. The full reservoir makes a huge difference, you only have to jack the left rear wheel about 4" and oil will run to pump via graviety, if the air can get out. Fill the system with oil, jack the rear wheel and go to dinner, oil will bypass the air while you dine.
