Blow-by at idle is normal for the IH 400 series engines, especially the "B" series engines. Look at the model/serial number right below the intake manifold. If the model number is DT414, it is an "A" series. If it is DT415, it's a "B" series. '81 should have a "B". As for the shifting, it COULD be out of adjustment, but it probably needs the range trans cover rebuilt. Jumping out of gear is a good indication that a detent roller fell off. That's typical. It's a fairly time-consuming job to remove the range cover on an 86 series, so you might as well rebuild the whole shift linkage while you're at it. I have no personal experience with the PFC hydraulics found on the bigger '81 86's, but I do know that they are expensive to fix and many were converted back to the old style. As for the 1086 you are thinking of installing a TA in, if it came from the factory with no TA, it will be very expensive to install one now. If the factory TA was eliminated, it will still be pretty expensive to reinstall, depending on what was done to eliminate it.
