Rob, if the ammeter is wired correct if you turn on the lights or ignition (unless its a mag) when shes not running it ought to swing over to - discharge, but then once running if shes charging swing over to + charge. If it does just the opposite of that swap its leads side to side and it will then register correctly. Normally theres but ONE wire on the ammeters SUPPLY terminal which is to the battery/starter often at the starter switch or solenoid where the big battery cable attaches. Its other LOAD terminal is what feeds loads like lights n ignition (unless its a 4 pole VR with the L terminal) PLUS wires to the BAT terminal on a Voltage Regulator/Cutout Relay. If you wired up a VR in opposite polarity it could harm it so to be safe be sure n re polarize the genny once all is rewired.

If a bunch of wires are bad or frayed I like your idea to re wire the whole thing n be done with it.
