I believe you have the pump and the cylinder unit mixed up. The big cast housing under the gas tank contains the reservoir, control valve and the hydraulic ram, sticking out either side is the rockshaft. Two soild lines run from this housing down the exhaust side of the motor and connect to the small pump, which is bolted to the front of the engine block. The pump is mounted up there so it can be drived from the cam gears. Any leak into the crankcase is through the pump like Raymond said. Hope this helps.
