Bob could probably answer this better than I can, but here are a couple thoughts. First, with twice the voltage and the same current, your generator would be putting out twice the power. It might be a good thing if it did not put out as much current as it did when it was 6 volts. Another item is that when you are using 12 volts, your battery only needs to deliver half the current to get the same work done. Your battery should not need as much to keep the charge up. To be honest, unless you do lots of starting and short time running, 10 amps should be plenty to keep your battery charged.
