Hugh, this is strange. About 2 years ago, we traded a IH 400 4-row 38" planter for a Case-IH 950 6-row 30" with the 1000 RPM pump. The 686 was already set for 30" rows, but had the 540 PTO. I looked into the possibility of switching to 1000 instead of narrowing up the 786. The I&T manual says it can be done, but only by splitting the tractor and replacing the constant mesh gears at the front of the transmission. When I go to the IH parts books, they give no mention of any 1000 RPM PTO parts for any of the 656 series tractors. In the end, the 786 got set for 30" rows and the 686 got traded for a 3088. I'm very surprised that IH never offered a dual unit for the 656 series. I think some of the small British utilities even had the option of 1000.
