Having your modum hyjacked

My server is a local independently owned telephone company and it is not a long distance connection. Yesterday my wife told me she couldn't get on the internet. When I investigated I discovered that on the screen dial up icon , my name had a series of numbers behind it and the server number had been changed to a 1-900 number. My modum gave a busy signal when I tried to connect. I assume this is one of those numbers that they charge you exhorbent amounts per minute if you call it ,or some one has attempted to hyjack the modum and place thousands of long distance phone calls on it. My son cleared the computer and reloaded all the programes and everything seems fine this morning. I do have PC cillan virus screen but someone was able to change the dial up number. I believe I am safer than most people because long distance dial up modums are more vulnerable. If I have said anything that is not so it is only because of my limited ability with a computer. I only post this as a warning and to seek any information any of you can share with me...Mike in Exeter Ontario
