Had a similar problem with my M. Sputtered with choke in but ran fine with choke out. Had good flow to the carb so I assumed it was the carb. I rebuilt the carb still sputtered. Found out it was a piece of dirt in the bottom of the gas tank just before the glass bowl . Just enough to slow the flow during the run. I blew air lightly in the gas line backwards into the tank and it dislodged what ever was stuck. Runs great. Hope this helps, Mark
